Working on my first book…
One of the year long projects I’ve been working on as part of my TAFE studies is a Photo Book as part of my Research class. It is based on a topic of our choosing and ideally should be a reflection of ourselves as photographers or of topics of interest, however with a minimum of 24 images to be shot and a budget of $100 in printing costs there is a lot of logistics at play here.
As we’ve only just started Semester 2 the time has come to start working on the logistics for what will (hopefully) become our final book; including layout, page count, text, typeface, etc, etc. What I found weirdly fascinating in myself is that despite being someone who has no love for tradition or feels bound (get it) to abide by it, I really want a book that fits those tropes.
I might not be able to afford to publish some leather bound tome with hundreds of pages, but I absolutely don’t want a cheap shitty floppy paperback book and I’m falling in love with the idea of having a classic hardback with a dustjacket that you can lose in five seconds; even though I sometimes absolutely hate reading them!
What I’m finding really interesting though is this part of the process is really hitting that geeky part of me that loves things like fonts and kerning, designing around negative space, constructing a flow within images, and other stuff not really associates with “rIgHt bRaInEd” creative thinking.
I don’t want to talk too much about it until I get closer to having something more definitive in my hands and I hope to self publish this with a goal of making a limited run of at least 10 books, if not more if I am able to crowdfund such endeavours, but it’s not going to be a cheap endeavour and I know I don’t enough of a following to justify a large print run.
I will say at this point is that it is looking to be about 60 pages containing approx 28 images that have been produced this year using one of my favourite techniques HDR, which I may do an entire blog post on at some point because I do love talking about it. Can’t wait to show it to you some point in the future.
